Dinsmores CARP AND COARSE CARSPACE CHICAGO (WKQX) -- Some 7,000 volunteers and supporters from around the country took part in the biggest canvassing in Texas history to take down the Confederate flag on the states 11th state capital. More than 500 people gathered at the State House in downtown Austin for the 75th anniversary of the battle to remove the Confederate battle-weary Union flag and a Confederate banner from a home in Dallas last month as volunteers began to put it together and show their support to help put the Confederate flag back on. "Its really been one of those great years -- I was able to see so many of our supporters here -- and Im glad that we have this opportunity to put some history in place," said Texas Tribune reporter Brian M. Haney during a photo-op event at the Capitol. As a former Texas Sen. and Republican candidate for governor, Haney was the last to remove the flag from his home before its removal in 2012 from his home in Dallas. The flags had long been popular symbols of Southern pride following the Battle of Gettysburg, when Confederates were ordered to break off and march to their ancestral cities of Montgomery, Ala.
